What does a Middle School Counselor do?
Middle school is both an exciting, yet challenging time for students. It is a time of personal exploration, a time to seek out one's own identity, and physiologically a time of rapid growth. Middle School Counselors can have a strong impact during these years by implementing a school counseling program that helps maximize personal and academic development.
Middle School Counselors help students by giving them essential and developmentally appropriate tools for decision-making, healthy relationships, study and test-taking skills, and coping skills. Counselors provide services through Guidance Lessons, Small Groups, Academic Planning, Individual Counseling, and other responsive services at the Middle School level. |
According to ASCA (American School Counselors Association), identifying students’ academic and social/emotional needs, as well as providing any necessary interventions, is essential in removing barriers to learning and helping students develop skills and behaviors critical for academic achievement. The knowledge, attitudes and skills students acquire during these years build the foundation for future success.
